Vegetation Management and Active Landfill Maintenance
Location: Middlesex County Utility
Industry: Solid Waste/Landfill
Services: Slope Cutting, Vegetation Management, & Litter Patrol
Scope of Work: Maintaining 50 acres of property, 2x
Overview:
Effluent Retrieval Services completed a vegetation management and litter patrol project at Middlesex County Landfill, maintaining 50 acres within the site’s 315-acre property. The project focused on maintaining active landfill areas through a combination of specialized slope mowing, weed whacking, brush and vegetation management, and litter patrol cleanup.
The Challenge:
Maintaining vegetation and cleanliness across an active landfill requires specialized equipment, coordinated crews, and the flexibility to work around changing site conditions. Uneven terrain and landfill slopes presented additional challenges, while rainfall delayed the start of the project by four days.\
ERS needed to coordinate multiple crews to address vegetation growth and litter accumulation while keeping active areas maintained and accessible.
The Approach:
ERS deployed specialized equipment and coordinated crews to complete the required maintenance across the designated 50 acres.
Key services included:
- Ventrac Slope Mowing: Specialized mowing equipment was used to maintain vegetation on challenging landfill slopes and terrain.
- Weed Whacking: Crews addressed vegetation in areas inaccessible to traditional mowing equipment.
- Vegetation Management: Brush clearing and general vegetation maintenance helped keep designated areas under control.
- Litter Patrol: Crews collected litter throughout active landfill areas to support ongoing site cleanliness.
The project required close coordination between mowing and litter patrol teams. When both operations were underway, ERS coordinated a workforce of up to 12 team members, with six focused on mowing and vegetation management and six assigned to litter patrol and cleanup.
The Solution:
ERS deployed its crews and equipment to systematically work through the designated acreage while adjusting the project schedule around weather conditions. By coordinating manpower, equipment, and site conditions, ERS was able to continue making progress while maintaining the property to the required standards.
Project Timeline and Crew Coordination:
The project was initially delayed by four days due to rainfall before the three-week project period began. During this period, ERS coordinated its crews to complete the required maintenance while adapting to site conditions.
Litter patrol operated on a recurring schedule for three weeks out of each month, with team members typically available on call to respond to site needs. This approach allowed ERS to support ongoing cleanliness alongside its vegetation management work.
The Results:
Through specialized mowing equipment, coordinated field crews, and a combination of vegetation management and litter patrol services, ERS supported the maintenance of 50 acres within Middlesex County Landfill’s 315-acre property.
The project demonstrated ERS’s ability to coordinate multiple services across active landfill areas while adapting to weather-related delays and recurring maintenance needs.
Project Impact:
The work supports engineering access to the landfill gas management system, establishes a fire break along areas bordering commercial properties, and helps maintain cleaner active landfill areas.
