The Story Behind Pups for Vets – Waived adoptions for Veterans and Active Duty Military
Every program has a story behind it. For Pups for Vets, that story begins with a dog named Snuffy and a man named George Albert Beagle.
George Albert Beagle, known to his family and friends as “Al,” was the late father of Jon Beagle, owner of Effluent Retrieval Services. Al had a lifelong love for dogs, but one pug in particular held a special place in his heart.
Years ago, two pugs were in need of homes. Jon took one, while the other, Snuffy, went to his father. It didn’t take long for Al and Snuffy to become inseparable.
Snuffy quickly became part of everything Al did. He would take him to parades, dress him up, and bring him along wherever he could. For Al, Snuffy wasn’t simply a pet, he was family.
Al was also a veteran who enlisted and served during the Vietnam War. He was the kind of person who helped others simply because he believed it was the right thing to do. He never did it for recognition or attention.
That same spirit became the inspiration behind Pups for Vets.
After Al passed away, Jon wanted to find a way to honor his father’s memory while carrying on something he knew Al cared deeply about: helping others and giving dogs a second chance.
That led to Pups for Vets, a program created to help connect veterans and dogs in need of loving homes.
For years, the program continued quietly behind the scenes, with Jon’s wife, Laura, and her salon serving as its sponsor. Now, Jon and Laura are bringing Pups for Vets back into the spotlight and working to create greater awareness of the program and Harley’s Haven through ERS.
Al’s love for Snuffy, his service to his country, and the way he gave to others without ever seeking recognition became the foundation for something that continues to help both veterans and dogs today.
Pups for Vets is more than a sponsorship. It is a way to honor Al’s memory by continuing the kind of kindness he showed throughout his life, quietly, genuinely, and simply because it mattered.
Al Beagle was the inspiration behind it all.
